Found a bone and scale in my food. The bone was in the ginger… Which is even grosser than finding it in my fish. The sushi was awesome tasting though. And obviously fresh. The miso tofu soup was great, best I’ve had. All around great food and experience other than the scale and bone.

Damn, well the sushi is super good. The fish is flown in daily and totally fresh, you can definitely tell with the quality and taste. The presentation is actually quite attractive. I would hella put this place on the map for Thursday night sushi and saki.
the «taco salad» is not actually a taco salad… It’s octopus and cucumber plus weird fish sauce… They could have totally just named it that. Just sayin.

I’ve been eating at Kampai since 1984. It was small and very personal then, and Maggie the beautiful waitress made everyone happy with her service. The cooks would greet each client and knew many of us by name. The fresh quality fish always pleased, and the rolls are always incredible. It’s bigger now, less personal, the service is average, but the sushi always is great.

If you’re idea of good sushi includes a mountain of mayonnaise on every roll, this place might be up your alley.

I’ve been a very {very} long time customer of Kampai Sushi. I’ve waited a few visits to review and still can’t get myself past three stars. The sushi here is good, but it used to be very good. Comparatively to the other sushi restaurants in Redding Kampai is still my favorite, but it’s not as good as it used to be. I too, like mentioned in a few other reviews, have noticed an increase in rice and decrease in fish portion. I ordered the Sam Roll which I normally love, but tonight it was so spicy I could barely eat it. I also ordered the crazy roll for my friend and it was very good. Of course I will be back and I do still love eating here but the portions and sushi itself just is not as good as it used to be.

Used to be my favorite and only sushi place. This last time really did it for me. The sushi was over 60% all rice with little to nothing in them. My boyfriend and I ordered two rolls. One was a roll with cucumber avocado and fried shrimp. The other was tofu and avocado and cucumber. Apparently their prices changed highly. Because the tab was way too high for such a small amount of food. Won’t be coming back for a while

Lunch for 2 and $ 75 later left a huge disappointment. The rolls were horrible, excess rice and drenched in that orange sauce on the spicy tuna roll. Seeing we are from the Bay Area we had already lowered our expectations given we were driving through redding. We orders several different Nigiris and while the fish flavor was there it still had excess rice. Service was not much better, even at the bar. The chef forgot to bring out our cucumber salad and when he finally did you could clear tell it had not been marinated previously.
Overall this place is way over priced let alone for redding. I will not return, and suggest you pass on it.

We frequently notice this «Little Gem» as we exit the Raley’s Shopping Center but always have groceries to get home with. This time, I stopped in!
First, I noticed very clean, nicely decorated & well-lit ambiance. Next, I was promptly and nicely welcomed.
Not having a «take out» menu, I was offered a regular menu to view and assisted in my choices by Sam, the Owner (I assume by the way he seemed in charge). He was extremely pleasant to talk to and excellent in helping me choose my take out order, based on my preferences.
WoW! Perfect choices! He was also kind enough to offer ½ of 2 different choices on the menu :)
I went with the Crazy Roll (which is deep fried) and the Num Roll. He also let me sample some of their fresh made hotter sauces (since I mentioned I really like spicy/hot). The sauces were delicious!
But, I must say that the Rolls we chose were so deliciously packed with a variety of fresh seafood/fish flavors & awesome sauce/toppings, I used very little of the Fresh Made sauce he sent home with me. It won’t be wasted though. Too delicious & fresh to waste. I’m sure I can use it in other ways :))
I will definitely be back for more. and to try other suggestions from Sam!
819 — Came back for lunch with my Hubby to celebrate our anniversary and actually eat here rather than take-out.
I ordered ½ Num Roll and ½ Dragon Roll with the House Salad. My Hubby asked Sam (the Owner) if they could make him a Chicken Chow Mein dish since he doesn’t like Sushi. Ha! He ate some of MY Sushi and really enjoyed it
I tasted his Chow Mein dish as well and we both agree it’s the best we’ve ever eaten. and we’ve eaten a lot of Chow Mein in several cities in CA!
Loved the Peanut Salad Dressing on my salad and both Sushi Rolls were absolutely delicious! Washed down with a little Saki and. WOW. The perfect anniversary meal! We even had some to take home.
Thanks again Sam & Staff! You do not disappoint, food is consistently delicious & the service to perfection!

Worst service i have ever had at any restaurant in redding. Food tasted good but not worth the price or the lack of service we had. It took 20 minutes for a drink order, another 30 after that for a completely different server to take our food order, another 30 minutes after that to get our food from a different server. Then another 25 minutes after all of that to receive our check. We were never asked if we needed anything or if our food was to our liking and mind you the restaurant was not all that busy and we were at a table easily visible. Will never go here again.

We are asking the spicy powder then the chef gave us the powder and their house made spicy sauce. It’s delicious!!! Tks.

Very helpful servers were knowledgable. Food was very fresh and the menu is HUGE! There is so much variety. I had the Death roll and Bird roll as well as a bite of 34 others from my friends’ plates and I loved everything.
The prices are a touch high for Redding, but nothing like the city. I highly recommend.

I’ve been here a few times when I’ve been back in Redding to visit my parents. The inside isn’t very big but adorably decorated with a cozy atmosphere. I’ve always been seated quickly and the servers have all been very pleasant.
They have gluten free soy sauce and the rolls I’ve had have always been fresh and excellent. My dad isn’t a sushi fan but he really enjoyed the mixed tempura last time he came with me. Price is super affordable as well.
Definitely a great little hidden gem sushi place I wouldn’t pass up!

This place have come a long ways, they have a big menu. I think they have a little bite of everything for everyone. If you like sashimi than y’all love their variety of fresh fish. Not into fish they have a wide variety of chicken and beef dishes such as the bento boxes and chicken or beef over rice. They have vegetarian rolls and much more!

Well, that was another disappointing trip to Kampai… I used to go there all the time but the service continued to go down hill so I stopped all together. After a while, I figured I would give it a try again because it truly used to be one of my favorite sushi bars in Redding. Once again, the wife and I were given extremely poor service. They aren’t rude, just unwilling to tend to their paying (and tipping) customers. Today as we were eating our food, the waitress tried to take the plate I was eating off of. I have also noticed that their prices have increased by about 23 dollars a roll but they have added more rice, less ingredients, and poor flavor…
I guess its fair to say that my patronage (and $ 60.00 meal tabs) will cease with Kampai. I will never return to this restaurant and I would highly recommend that you don’t either. Don’t waste your time, appetite, or money on poor service and sub-par food…

Kampai has the Redding Trifecta! 1) Overpriced, 2) Mediocre food, and 3) Bad service.
I’ve been twice and was underwhelmed. I’m writing this review because frosty tipped sushi «chef» harassed the servers during my last visit.
If you’ve had good sushi, Kampai will disappoint you, both in quality and price. My Sam Roll was American in every way, which I expected. For almost $ 17, not worth it. (BTW, what Kampai lacks in quality, it makes up for in excess rice.)
The real culinary low light was the traditional sushi. I order tamago (japanese omelette) and amaebi (sweet shrimp). The tamago was hideous– it had the texture of plastic, and was super sweet. Pro tip: Tamago isn’t suppose unravel. The amaebi heads were down right sacrilegious. They were heavily breaded and cover in unagi and spicy mayo. WTF!?!
I’ll skip the part on how my server seemed to be annoyed by my presence. Or how she didn’t time my food. Or how she made me wait 10 minutes after dropping my check.
The worst part was the arrogant sushi roller behind the sushi counter. Not only did he belittle his fellow cooks, he constantly verbally assaulted the young servers. I can’t stand that crap.

This is a Redding gem for sushi. One of the prized chefs of Tokyo Garden took a leap of faith and opened his own business, pouring his heart and soul into his love of Japanese cuisine. Sam and his wife, welcome every customer with a smile. I have never had a bad meal here and enjoy every visit.

It was a long drive from the Redwoods on the coast and we were getting hungry. I was doing a Unilocal search with the spotty data coverage in the mountains with dropouts every 2 minutes, but was able to find Kampai and we rushed to get there before closing. I’m really glad we did because a lot of restaurants in the area close early, like 8. Too used to NYC places opening until 10 or 11. There are a lot of mixed reviews, but mostly positive, so we gave it a go.
The sushi was inspiring with a lot of original creations that they dubbed fusion rolls marrying Asian styles & tastes and mixed some great flavors. Some of the sauces didn’t go well together though. The fresh fish were sliced into some generous portions I haven’t seen in a long time. My wife could hardly finish her sashimi platter despite not having any of the included bowl of rice (which translates to «more for me»). I had the sushi & fried oyster combo which was more than alright. Whenever you say oysters, I am so there. I have to say that the white tuna was as smooth as silk in my mouth. Mmm! Everything you see in my photos? 1 meal, 4 people, all gone.
A little on the pricey side but you do get a lot of food. Don’t know when we’ll be coming back this way again, but I hope Kampai will be there when we do with some great sushi!
